The "L" in 316L stands for "Low Carbon" (≤0.03% vs 0.08%), which prevents chromium carbide precipitation during welding — a phenomenon that weakens corrosion resistance in standard 304 steel.
Add 2-3% molybdenum, and 316L achieves a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number PREN 23-28, compared to just 18-20 for 304 steel. In practical terms: your coffee, tea, lemon water, and sports drinks stay pure — with absolutely no metallic aftertaste.
